The nation's first Green Rail Corridor ... which ensures zero toilet discharge on rail tracks, was today inaugurated by Railways Minister Suresh Prabhu.

To ensure proper working of the bio-toilets, Southern Railway had established a bio-lab at the coaching depot, which handled the coaches, in September last year for testing the discharge. Indian Railway had developed the environment-friendly ‘IR-DRDO Bio-toilets’, in association with DRDO.

The Era of BIO - TOILETS vs. Septic Tank

India inaugurated the first "Green Train Corridor", how does it affect the Indian people?

MAIN PROBLEMS WITH CURRENT TOILETS
  • Maintenance: The rail crew isn't solely responsible for ensuring sanitation. It depends on the public too. That's why most bathrooms on trains don't smell like cherry blossoms in a fresh meadow.
  • Odour: Imagine holding a flower dipped in spoiled stew. Now suppose you are in a room with dimensions 4 X 5ft. With 100 such flowers. Do you believe it right? That's about the same odour of an average train bathroom.
  • High Water Use: Water use depends on the number of people who use the train. 1.1% of the country's population travel on a train daily! So, you can imagine the water consumption required.
