CAT EXAM 2018 NOTIFICATION & SCHEDULE (Details)

The Common Admission Test (CAT) is a computer based test. The timeline for CAT generally remains similar every year. It is held only once a year usually within the 1st week of December in a single day window. The following table brings to you the important dates for CAT 2017 based on the tentative timeline. Eligibility Criteria For CAT:

Graduation in any discipline from any institution recognised by the HRD Ministry of
the Government of India is accepted.
At least 50%or equivalent CGPA

Students who are pursuing a final year of bachelor’s degree/equivalent qualification examination can also apply provided they complete their graduation within the stipulated date.

Note:
  • The percentage of marks secured by students will be calculated on the basis of practice followed by the college/university from where candidates have obtained the bachelor’s degree.
  • There is no restriction on the number of attempts.

Note:
The three categories of disability are a) low vision blindness, b) hearing impairment and c) Locomotor disability/Cerebral Palsy. This provision is applicable if the candidate suffers from any of the listed disabilities to the extent of not less than 40 percent, as certified by a medical authority as prescribed and explained in the said PWD Act, 1995 (Section 39)

Application Process:
The candidates who are interested in CAT 2018 are required to apply online.

 Following are the steps of the registration process-
  • Visit the official website www.iimcat.ac.in
  • Click on “Apply for CAT”
  • Fill up the application form by entering certain details, such as name, email ID, mobile number etc. and procure the login credentials
  • After filling in personal details, upload your picture and put in your signature
  • Make payment of fees
  • Click on the submit button
  • Candidate will receive a confirmation email on his email address

Application Fee:
To register for the test, all the applicants will be required to pay a non-refundable application
fee. A General / NC-OBC candidate will be charged Rs.1800 while an SC/ST /PWD candidate
will be chargedRs.900 to take the examination. Fees can be paid online through Debit card/
credit card/ net banking.

CAT exam centres:
It is expected that CAT 2018 will be conducted in around 138 cities across India. Last year,
the test was conducted in 136 cities. Each year, IIMs or the CAT conducting authorities add a
number of cities where CAT is conducted to make it more convenient for test takers across
India. During the application process, candidates have to select four test cities in the order of
priority. A candidate will be allotted a test site in one among the four preferred test cities in
any one of the sessions after the last date of registration.


Exam Pattern:
CAT is known to be an unpredictable paper and the exam pattern is changed almost every year to surprise the students. The Common Admission Test 2016 comprised of three sections namely Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension, Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning & Quantitative Ability. The question paper contained both MCQ as well as non-MCQ type questions. As the official notification for CAT 2017 will be released by the end of July, given below is the expected Exam Pattern for CAT 2017 based on CAT 2016 Official Exam Pattern:

  • A basic on-screen calculator is allowed for computation
  • Candidates cannot switch from one section to another while answering questions in a section.

Marking scheme:
The question paper will contain objective type questions with both ‘multiple choice answers’ and ‘type in the answers’ type questions. Candidates are required to choose/type the correct answer only. For every right answer, candidates get 3 marks and for every wrong answer, 1 mark is deducted. There is no mark awarded/deducted for unanswered questions. There is no negative marking for TITA type questions.

Although there is no specific syllabus for CAT 2018 by IIMs, based on the past years’ pattern and analysis, we can assess the CAT 2017 syllabus. The syllabus of CAT is divided into 3 sections:
  1. Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning
  2. Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension
  3. Quantitative Ability
